Blur Live at Goldsmiths Union
Written by

As its in my area thought I would go have a nosey at the queue for Blur’s warm up gig at Students Union, I was just on my way to bring back a DVD back to the local shop (Angel Heart - a classic!) when I bumped into my mate who said he had a spare wristband - believe me these things do not happen often!! As I got over my dismay at getting in I entered Goldsmiths Union (v strange to be back in a SU after all this time - memories listening to Blur came flooding back!) we headed straight to the four deep bar. The place was heaving - and very very hot, by the time Blur took the stage I was already drenched or was that just the cider someone accidentally chucked over me! At first I was bowled over by how youthful the band looked, all trim like the last 9 years away was yesterday. Then the opening chords of She’s So High rang out over the hall - it felt so familiar that this Students Union (Graham and Alex studied here in the late 80s -fact pop fans!) befitted the music somehow.
After that its was an onslaught of familiar tunes -with everyone swaying in time to the nostalgic anthems, you forget how many great songs Damon and Co have. From Tender to Beetlebum to Trim Tramm and the glorious To the End. The guys came back for a blistering encore of Song 2 and For Tomorrow. Rounding up the evening with a giant singalong to The Universal -almost like a Church Hymn for the Brit Pop generation! (did I just write that ha ha ha!) What a great show, the guys really showed any younger indie group worth their mantle how its done, lean, mean and very much together..
