Joan Jett - a true Queen of Noise
Written by
As you all well know, the biopic chronicling the rise and fall of The Runaways - the first all-female rock band formed by a group of teenage girls from Hollywood, CA is poised to hit the cinemas this year. Bearing in mind that these girls were all 16 or younger when they recorded their first album - they achieved so much in their four years as a band and really paved the way for females wanting to break into the hard rock industry.
One of our contributors Brad Elterman had the privilege of being good friends with Joan Jett back in the Seventies and we’ve been fortunate to have him give us the inside scoop on the electrifying Ms Jett and the portrait he took below….

“Joan Jett and I were friends back in the Seventies. She felt comfortable letting me take her photograph and I was over the moon! She was not famous back then, but I could definitely see her incredible charisma and passion for her music. I cannot tell you how serious she was about her music.
This photo of Joan was taken backstage at the Whiskey A Go Go in 1977. She really wanted to give me a good photograph that would shock the fans in Japan.
We took photos all over LA. At Santa Monica Pier, in the park, on Hollywood Blvd and in the motel room she was living in, at legendary The Tropicana. One day, she even let me photograph her with her switch blade! I will never forget that moment.
Last month in New York I saw Joan for the first time in thirty years. Her charisma is still intact and she looks more beautiful than ever.”
The Runaways hits our screens on March 19th 2010.
