The Lea Shores

Written by Anthony

leashores.jpg
THE LEA SHORES provide string-laden psychedelia from South London’s paisley underground. They deliver huge guitar driven melodies and mesmerizing vocal harmonies, courtesy of twin brothers Simon and Nick Webb, embellished by aural sound-scapes from violinist and Brian Enocohort Nell Catchpole. Echoes of Spiritualized and Ride blend with a hint of The Beta-Band and Doves evoking a rich and hypnotic sound. With captivating live shows at Wireless, Glastonbury and Latitude festival last
year and a support slot with Kasabian at The Royal Albert Hall, THE LEA SHORES have established a reputation as a colossal live act in the making. Andy Bell of Ride and Oasis fame had this to say about them; “THE LEA SHORES are my favourite new band…i was hooked straight away. They’re fucking epic!”

THE LEA SHORES recently recorded their debut album with top producer Ben Hillier and the NME have already added them to the ‘What’s on the NME Stereo’ section of the magazine saying, “Debut album from the South London band, mixing blissed-out psychedelia with festival friendly anthems.”
The Lea Shores are:
Simon Webb: Vocals / Nick Webb: Guitars, Vocals / Nell Catchpole:Violin / Jamie Smith: Guitars / Gabriel Lloret: Bass / Ben Burns: Drums
‘Fear SOS’ (from their debut album) is now available as a FREE DOWNLOAD @ www.puregroove.co.uk. For more information about THE LEA SHORES go to www.myspace.com/theleashores

Benjamin Scott Folds

Last night at the Shepherds Bush Empire i had the pleasure to finally see Benjamin Scott Folds, front man of Ben Folds, also formerly apart of Ben Folds Five (even though there were only three band members). He has somewhat of a large following in my Native Australia due to his songs quirky/humorous lyrics, fun beats and Ben’s own extraordinary piano skills. The love seems shared too as band entered to Aus’s very own Regurgitator and their song “I Sucked a Lot of C*ck to Get Where I Am”. It instantly brought a smile to my face, and I’m sure also to many other expats in the crowd too, who also probably, like me, had a few cold ones in the “She Bu Walkie” next door. Once settled next to his mighty piano workstation and a quick hi pitched Michael Jacksonesque “thank you very much”, the show lifted off. A mixture of the old Ben Folds Five and the new ensued, keeping a good mix of humour, crowd involvement, spontaneity and energy coursing throughout the set. Bassist Jared Reynolds and Drummer Sam Smith did a fine job of keep up with their lead man while a mysterious tambourine wielding fellow popped in and out of songs as fun little side act. While not terribly familiar with their last album, the music was easy to pick up and absorb. The largely middle class white crowd where thoroughly enjoyed and left grinning from ear to ear following the encore of “Underground” and “One Angry Dwarf and 2000 Solemn Faces”, these songs brought with them a sweet sense of nostalgia, remembering many a fun, rowdy nights back home. Thank you Ben Folds!

My Bloody Ears!

Written by Anthony

17 years is a long time to wait to see a band but last night it was all worth it as the reformed My Bloody Valentine took to the stage at the Roundhouse last night. It was the four piece’s final night of their 5 night run at the legendary venue and boy were they loud…..even louder than when I first saw them back in 1991 in Bradford Uni on the Loveless tour. I had heard from several people beforehand that they were giving out earplugs as you went in. My friends and I got there at the very last minute minus said earplugs, therefore our ears had to withhold the full impact of their white noise guitar onslaught (earlier in the pub we debated weather there was such a thing as “Brown Noise”, a type of frequency whereby your bowels empty!! - surely no such thing I hope). Once you got used to the sheer volume the songs spoke for themselves and memories of my teen angsty sixth form life came flooding back. A glorious feeling came over me and was so happy to witness a band that was once so vital and continue to be so. The set featured heavily from Loveless with one or two songs I remember from the early e.ps. As well as the earplugs I had also heard from friends on previous nights that their seminal indie classic You Made Me Realise was played as the encore for a whopping 20 minute. Therefore I was fully prepared when the opening notes came flooding out, midway through the song came the dirge of sound that took up most of the song. I guess you could say it was an endurance test and lots of the audience gave up “listening” and left however I had a wide smile on my face, what other band could actually remove 1/2 their their audience on their final song, genius! it was a surreal happening 60’s type affair, and I for one loved it. I was hoping it shook up the people of Camden, woke them up from their indie complacency. and you never know perhaps last night’s gig inspired a new generation to form bands just like they did back in the day. MBV we salute you.

The Subways - Exclusive shoot in Retna Studios!

Written by Anthony

Michael Robert Williams shot UK indie threesome The Subways in our Fulham studio this week.

Indie trio The Subways will be launching their new single ‘Alright’ with a live performance and signing on Monday 16 June, 6:00pm at zavvi Oxford Street
Alright is the first single from ‘All Or Nothing’, The Subways long-awaited second outing, following 2005’s ‘Young For Eternity’. This album saw the band decamp to LA to work with legendary US alt-rock producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins), who beefed up and smoothed out their sound. The result is a considerable sonic progression from the rudimentary garage punk of their debut, which sees them absorbing various influences from US rock history and beyond.
